Program
DescriptionOperating year round since 1999, New Horizons Youth Ranch is currently serving up to 12 boys, emphasizing concern for assisting the helping entire family. Residents often come with little ability to achieve academically, build meaningful relationships, control impulses, or form responsible moral codes.
New Horizons Youth Ranch addresses many social challenges and problems of our day including: adoptive family issues; divorced family issues; poor academic achievement; single parent issues; along with many others.
The focus and intention of New Horizons Youth Ranch is primarily on character development and family reunification.
The development of character is measured through interaction between the staff and the residents in the following categories;
- Following instructions
- Making amends and taking accountability
- Putting forth the effort to change attitudes and actions for the better
- Respect for authority
- Seeking self-respect and trustworthiness
- Seeking wisdom
- Treating others in a compassionate, loving and respectful way
- Using your abilities to learn compassion, encourage and serve
Program Dimensions
The dimensions of our treatment include:
Educational: Classes are held on the Ranch.
A nine (9) month traditional classroom approach is used. The summer offers one (1) full credit in “Outdoor Education”, and field trips make use of community resources.
Emotional: Our staff provides a healing environment for the youth.
Recreational: Program activities offered include fishing, hiking, horseback riding, hunting and swimming. Our location provides excellent opportunity for involvement in backpacking, camping and hiking with daylight hours in the summer months extending until 10pm mountain time.
Social: Anti-social behaviors are addressed generally through our highly structured. Relational/Behavioral/Consequential treatment program.
Building social relationship based on character development is stressed.
Spiritual: A Biblical philosophy is fostered for residents to integrate into their personal value system, which provides a foundation for present and future family relationships.
Vocational: Residents have options in automotive, construction, culinary, life skills, and ranching. Residents are aided in the discovery of their aptitudes and given work experience opportunities. A strong work ethic is modeled and taught.
Program Services
The services provided to achieve these treatment goals include:
Domestic Services: Nutritional needs are met with well-prepared and balanced meals. Laundry services are also provided for each resident.
Resident involvement in both areas may be expected.
Facility Services: Facility maintenance projects provide residents opportunities to receive vocational training.
Family Services: This includes family, group and individual counseling with the purpose of addressing challenges and issues that have affected the family.
All family members must be involved in order to accomplish greater family cohesion and reunification.
Youth Services: Our front-line staff provides 24-hour supervision of our residents. They demonstrate Christ-centered lives and are personally involved in the resident’s daily life.
Other Programs
There are additional vital areas woven into the fabric of how our program operates; these areas include:
Parent Cooperation: For treatment to be successful, full cooperation on the part of the parent is vital. Treatment may be terminated if such cooperation breaks down.
Parent Participation: Visits and Family Workshops in which all take part are included in this program.
Parents are required to come for the Family Workshop weekends in July, November and March.
These weekends include workshops, small group discussions, consultation with Parent Coach, therapy meetings, and an opportunity to interact with staff and other parents.
Visits: Visits are encouraged. Visitors are limited to your son’s close relatives.
Supervision, transportation costs, and pre-arranged return times to the Ranch are your responsibility. Overnight accommodations may be arranged.
Discharge: Planning for the return of your son to the home is accomplished through joint planning between the parent, staff and therapist at the ranch.

Where Help Brings Hope
“During the time that I have lived in West Kootenai, Montana, and as a next door neighbor of New Horizons Youth Ranch, I can honestly say Tom, Rosie and their staff have taught, loved, and in some cases performed miracles with these boys. Having worked with kids most of my life through schools and the Department of Health, I knew a little about what should be going on. I see them when they first come, watch their progress, and I can only come to the conclusion that something is being done right and well. They are happy, cheerful, polite and just a great bunch of boys. Keep up the good work, all.”
