Family Involvement

At New Horizons Youth Ranch, families are part of the solution. When your child is acting out, your whole family system is challenged. In order to help you rebuild a healthy family, we ask you to actively participate throughout the New Horizon program.

Parent participation includes:
  • Parent and child written communication
  • Scheduled weekly calls with your child's clinician
  • Two-day family workshop three times a year (July, November, March)

Parent and child written communication
Parent letters are part of the therapeutic process for teens. Your letters allow your son to hear what you have to say without the usual emotional responses that often are tied to face-to-face contact. Written communication gives your child an opportunity to revisit and reflect on your words. Our trained staff helps them deal with any emotional responses from your correspondence. Letter writing gives you an opportunity to express concerns, share your love, and vent your feelings.

Letter writing offers a safe way for you and your son to reopen communication and begin to redevelop a more meaningful relationship.

Scheduled weekly calls with your child's clinician
Parent communication with our clinician is part of the family education process.

Talking weekly with your child's clinician keeps you abreast of your son’s progress and aids our staff in better meeting your child's needs.

HFS
Parent Coaching Services Provided by Horizon Family Solutions

Designed To Maximize Program Effectiveness

Whether blended, divorced, intact, or single-parent, every family has their own unique dynamics. These circumstances and many others form the basis for our individualized approach to the coaching relationship. Family strengths are recognized and enhanced while addressing those areas in which parents are challenged.

Horizon Family Solutions coaching services are a non-therapeutic model of assistance and support.

We have first hand experience in understanding the process you have gone through, the difficult decisions you have made and the challenges you face as you trust the program you have chosen to do their best for your child.

Boys and fishOnce the teen is out of the home, parents often experience a void and come face to face with themselves, their partner, and their other children.

The tremendous time and energy expended leading up to the decision to put a child in a program leaves little time for much else and a parent(s) often finds themselves 'at a loss' when the teen is finally placed in a safe environment. For many, this is a difficult time, full of questions, as they move forward to reclaim their energy and rediscover their interests. Imagine having the assistance of a personal coach, someone to partner with as you move forward.

Through regular coaching calls we assist the family in working towards mutual goals for their child.

This can be a time of excitement, fear and growth. This can be a time to demonstrate commitment for your teen by becoming a healthy adult role model while getting back in touch with dreams and goals that have been put on hold.

Two-day Family Workshop

Our Family Workshop creates an emotionally safe environment and provides:
  • Shared commitment to next steps for healing
  • Support for parents and connection with other parents
  • Specific tools to assist parents in their relationships with all family members
  • Mechanisms for parents to improve communication and strengthen boundaries
The cost of the Family Workshop is included in our admissions fee.

Please ask our admissions director for more information about this powerful learning experience.

Where Help Brings Hope

“Mary Ann and I know the work you did with our son John had it’s tough times, however, it has all been worth it. He went from having been into heavy gang activity to graduating New Horizons Youth Ranch. Now John has gone on to one of his biggest dreams, which is to serve in the Army. We are excited, as several years ago John did not have a future ahead of him at all. John is a good person, a remarkable son and brother, and now is an amazing soldier. Thank you for seeing the potential in our son and working with him. We love you guys.”
